Christian Service

“You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:37-39).

“For I was hungry, and you gave me food” (Matthew 25:35)

These words of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew establish the focus of Christian discipleship for all time: love – love of God and love of neighbor. At St. Linus, we hope to at least partially fulfill that command through our Christian Service Commission, which seeks to serve all who can be called neighbor, all who might in some way benefit from our parish mission to care for one another as mandated by Christ.

Christian service at St. Linus takes many forms and is offered by many different groups in many different settings. Christian service is feeding the hungry by providing nourishment through our food pantry or preparing and serving meals in soup kitchens. It is the packing and distribution of food baskets and gifts for the needy at Christmas, and the contribution of clothing and other necessities for those stricken with AIDS.

Christian Service is lending a financial hand those who cannot pay their bills, or spiritually and physically supporting the single mother who may be dealing with an unplanned pregnancy. It is supporting legislation that promotes human rights and providing health services to members of the parish whenever able. It is sponsoring programs and events that unite members of our community more closely in the God we worship. It is the building up of parish members through fellowship and shared experience.

In all situations, Christian service at St. Linus has as its goal the physical, spiritual and emotional welfare of those whom we serve. As Catholic Christians, we are all called to support the dignity of the human person, promote the common good, and to do whatever we can to meet the needs of the poor. We ask you to share in that mission as we contribute, whenever possible, our time, our treasure and our talents for the benefit of others through the many organizations and ministries that are part of our Christian Service Commission.
